Pet Behavioral Counseling in Castaic

Pet Behavioral Counseling

Does your pet hear “no” or “bad dog” more than their own name? Do you find yourself constantly cleaning up after them or repairing things or throwing things away that they destroyed? Or perhaps your pet is just aggressive and unable to be around when you have visitors. Whatever behavioral issue your pet has that’s negatively affecting your relationship with them, we want to help correct it. Golden State Veterinary Care offers basic behavioral counseling for all of our patients. This service is typically offered during the wellness visits, but a separate counseling appointment can be scheduled as well.

Contrary to popular belief, behavior counseling for pets is not the same as training. Training involves housebreaking and teaching a pet good manners and basic commands (sit, stay, come, etc.). This is usually done when a pet is young as a means of preventing certain behaviors that would otherwise occur naturally. Behavior counseling, on the other hand, addresses behaviors in pets of all ages that do NOT occur naturally but are caused by certain stimuli. It involves assessing a pet’s emotional state since many of these behaviors are associated with fear or anger.

Common Pet Behavior Problems

There are various stimuli that can cause a pet to behave a certain way, such as a person, an object, a sound, or the surroundings. Some of the most common behavior issues that we encounter here at our Castaic pet hospital include:

  • Biting/aggressive behavior
  • Separation anxiety (often displayed by shredding objects, such as toilet paper)
  • Obsessive compulsive behaviors
  • Urinating and defecating in the home
  • Phobias (such as those associated with vacuum cleaners and similar appliances)

If your pet has been exhibiting any of these behaviors, call 661-670-8773 to schedule a consultation, or let us know at your pet’s next wellness visit. For more severe behavior problems, we can recommend a local licensed pet behavior specialist in the area who can help. Our goal is to help get to the root of your pet’s negative behaviors, so they can be a more lovable, well-mannered companion. Call us today!
